When a child finishes elementary school or is preparing to transition to a new one, some parents unexpectedly learn: "We will have a CAT4 test."
What is this exactly? Will the child have to write a dictation? Or solve complex equations? Or maybe it's something scary that decides whether the child gets into a "good" school or not?
Let's ease the anxiety right away. CAT4 is not an exam. It is a tool that helps teachers and parents understand how a child learns best.
The test consists of four sections β called "batteries." Each one addresses a different aspect of thinking.
Verbal Reasoning. This involves working with words. The child might see, for example, "dog: puppy :: cat : ?" and needs to understand the relationship. This is not about vocabulary knowledge but about seeing logical connections between concepts.
Quantitative Reasoning. Working with numbers. "3, 6, 12, 24, ?" β what number comes next? No formulas are needed here. The key is recognizing a pattern.
Spatial Reasoning. Mental rotation of objects. What will a shape look like if it is folded or unfolded?
Non-Verbal Reasoning. Patterns and shapes without numbers or letters. Pure logic in pictures.
Each of these batteries represents a separate ability. They can develop at different rates.
π‘ Advice: Suppose a child is excellent at solving math problems but struggles to understand the problem statement. Or memorizes poems well but cannot draw a simple diagram. A teacher might say for years, "He is not attentive." But in reality, the child has strong verbal thinking but weak spatial thinking. In that case, "inattentiveness" is simply the inability to visualize what is described.
CAT4 allows you to stop wasting effort trying to "improve everything" and start working with the child's actual profile.
You might be surprised, but CAT4 is not conducted in English (unless the child takes the international version). In practice, adapted versions exist. The essence of the task is not knowing words, but performing an action.
Let's look at an example.
The correct answer is 'freezing' (because 'hot' is an extreme form of 'warm,' and 'freezing' is an extreme form of 'cold'). If the child has never heard the word 'freezing,' they won't answer. But if the word is familiar, they can easily draw the analogy.
Quantitative reasoning tasks look like simple number series or patterns. For example: "If 5 apples cost 100 rubles, how much do 15 cost?" There is no division here β just a pure logical step.
Spatial reasoning is tested through folding cubes, mirror reflections, and mental cutting of shapes. Adults call this ability "spatial imagination."
This is a very precise question. CAT4 is indeed called a test of cognitive abilities, but it is often confused with an IQ test. The difference is fundamental.
An IQ test tries to measure "general intelligence" with a single number. CAT4 shows four separate profiles. The key is this incredible gap: a child can have brilliant speech but weak logic, or vice versa.
π‘ Advice: If a child takes CAT4, you will receive not one number, but four. And the most valuable thing is the difference between them. For example, spatial ability = 110 points, while verbal ability = 85. This does not mean the child is unintelligent. It means they find it hard to learn by listening but very easy through diagrams and drawings.
When a school receives the results, it does not place a label on the child. It gains data that helps the teacher select appropriate materials.
That's why CAT4 is often used during the transition to middle school, when the workload increases sharply. The school knows: "This child needs information visualized, this one needs an algorithm, and this one just needs to listen in class."
But there's a deeper story too. Sometimes CAT4 helps uncover so-called "hidden abilities." A child may consider themselves a poor student simply because their strong area (e.g., spatial thinking) is not used in lessons at all. Once the school begins to build on it β performance improves.
Here lies the main misconception. CAT4 does not teach topics. It measures what is already there.
π‘ Advice: The best thing to do is nothing. Don't buy workbooks, don't sit with the child every evening. The only thing worth doing is familiarizing the child with the format of the tasks. So they don't panic when they encounter an unfamiliar type of question.
This is easy to do. There are demo versions available β a couple of dozen tasks. Show them to your child a day or two before the test. Let them simply see what the questions look like.
But if the child is worried β reassure them. The test does not give grades. Its results do not affect their report card. It's just a map for adults to navigate by.
After the test, you will receive a sheet with numbers and percentages β these are the SAP (Standard Age Score) and percentile.
SAP is a standardized score that compares the child to their peers. The average is 100 points. If a child scores 115, it is above average. 85 is below.
Percentile indicates how the child ranks. If a child is at the 90th percentile, it means 90% of their peers scored the same or less. 10% scored more.
Don't panic if the percentile is low. Instead, look at the profile. Ask yourself:
β Which battery is the strongest? β Which is the weakest? β Is there a large gap?
If the difference between a strong and weak area is more than 15β20 points β this is a signal for the school and parents: the child needs an adapted approach.
"If my child did poorly on the test, is it permanent?"
No, abilities develop. The profile can change, especially at a younger age. But the overall picture usually persists: if a child turned out to be a "visual learner," they will likely remain one.
"Can a weak area be trained?"
Yes, it can and should be. But not by practicing for the test. Through games. If spatial thinking is weak β do puzzles, draw room layouts, play Tangram. If verbal is weak β read riddles, play word association games.
"Why should we know this if the school doesn't provide individual attention?"
Then you can do it yourself. Knowing your child's profile, you will stop demanding things that are objectively difficult for them and start building on their strengths. The child will stop thinking, "I'm dumb." They will understand: "I just think differently."
