You open an assignment, read the first line—and your brain hits a wall. The words seem familiar, but together they form a messy blur. You reread it, slower this time. Nothing changes. By the third time, you start to get frustrated, and precious time slips away.
This doesn't just happen with math problems. Sometimes a history or social studies question is worded so convolutedly it feels like deciphering an ancient manuscript. But this isn't a reason to panic. It's a signal that it's time to take control of your own perception.
Imagine you're walking down a path and encounter an obstacle. The first reaction of any person is to stop. Historically, this is a defense mechanism: first assess the threat, then act.
Something similar happens when you encounter a complex text. The brain perceives an unfamiliar structure as an obstacle and switches to "inspection" mode. But an exam is not a forest. Here, the "freeze and assess" strategy works against us.
There's a second explanation for this freezing mechanism. When you come across an unclear fragment, the brain starts to loop through it, trying to find a familiar pattern. The longer you do this, the more tension builds up. And tension impairs your ability to see a simple solution.
What happened? You almost certainly started saying to yourself, "the value of variable... exceeds... parameter Y...". Your inner voice switched to slow reading mode, and then it got stuck. In reality, the essence of the phrase boils down to a simple rule: if X is greater than 2Y, then do such-and-such.
The third reason is the most important. The internal dialogue while reading a complex text often goes like this: "I don't understand, which means I don't know, which means I'll fail." The fear of failure weaves itself directly into the reading process, amplifying the block.

The most common mistake is trying to understand the entire condition sequentially, word by word. It's like trying to eat a whole watermelon without cutting it.

So, Sergei knows French (otherwise he'd be in the general group), and since he is not a numismatist, he must be a stamp collector. Simple, right?
The "Skeleton" technique is especially useful on exams where every word might carry hidden meaning. But it doesn't turn into guesswork—you're simply discarding the structure that initially seems complex.
Many of us, when reading a complex sentence, mentally translate it into simpler language. This is a good habit. The problem is we do it too literally.
Suppose the condition says: "The student solved three problems fewer than twice as many as his classmate." The brain starts building a chain: "three fewer... twice as many...". Confusion about the order of operations arises.
In reality, such constructions need to be reversed. Don't try to hold the entire sequence of "less—more—less" in your head. Divide it:
💡 Advice: Train the skill of "reversing" formulations in everyday life. Heard a complex instruction? Try mentally breaking it into three steps. It'll take 5 seconds, and the skill will stick faster than through dedicated practice.
Getting stuck on a complex phrase is often not about reading, but about procrastination. The brain looks for a reason to postpone difficult activity. And it finds one: "Well, I can't understand the condition. I need to figure it out. I'll wait for it to clear up on its own."
In reality, the condition won't clear up if you stare at it blankly. But you've already wasted 2–3 minutes on pointless rereading. And on top of the feeling of uncertainty, you have lost time, which increases anxiety.
This isn't a trick. It's the context-switching mechanism at work. The brain stopped pressuring itself, saw that other formulations were solvable, and relaxed. And in a relaxed state, the complex seems simpler.
How to apply this in practice? Set a strict rule for yourself: if you don't understand a formulation within 15 seconds, skip it. Come back to it after you've completed half of the remaining tasks.
There are tasks where every sentence is a full paragraph. Classic for the Unified State Exam in some subjects or complex logic tests. In such cases, the "Skeleton" technique works, but an additional step is needed.
Imagine the condition is an encoded message. You know there's a code in it, but you don't know where the key is. Your task isn't to read the message, but to find the key.
In practice, this looks like: read the last sentence of the task. Usually, that's where the question is. Knowing the question, search the text only for the data needed to answer it. Everything else is either extraneous information (yes, this is sometimes intentional!) or explanations that don't affect the solution.
💡 Advice: Draw three columns on your scratch paper: "What is being asked," "What is given," "What is extraneous." Mentally place the entire long text into these columns. When the columns are filled, the answer is almost always obvious.
You can learn to handle complex formulations in advance. You don't need to solve tons of problems. Just 10–15 minutes a day of special training is enough.
Exercise "Noise Cancellation." Take any text of moderate complexity (an article from a popular science magazine, a problem condition from the internet). Read it aloud once as fast as possible, emphasizing only the key words with your voice. Mumble the rest under your breath. After a week of such practice, your ability to grasp the essence on the fly will noticeably improve.
Exercise "Flip It." Take a complex condition and try to rewrite it so it fits into a single sentence of no more than 10 words. If you can't, it means you're trying to preserve the structure. Cut ruthlessly.
Exercise "Timer." Set a timer on your phone for 30 seconds. During this time, you need to read the condition and write down (or say) its essence in three words. Didn't make it? That means you again tried to understand everything at once. Learn to cut the excess.
💡 Advice: Parents, help your children do these exercises in a game format. Compete to see who can extract the essence from the same condition faster. Excitement will remove the fear of complex texts faster than any explanations.
Sometimes it happens that you're not stuck, but simply dealing with a poorly designed task. If the wording allows for two different interpretations, and the test author considers one correct, that's not your problem.
But on an exam, you can't argue with it. So the strategy is one: if you see two possible understandings of the condition, choose the one that seems more logical in the context of the topic. And move on. Dwelling on "what interpretation the author intended" is the same freezing mechanism, only in a more intellectual guise.
Complex formulations are not enemies. They are simply a signal that your brain is trying to read the text like a book, not like a task. Switch to "scanning" mode, cut out the noise, apply the 15-second rule, and don't let fear amplify the block.
Now you know that behind any heap of words, a simple essence is hidden. Your task is to learn to see it at a glance. And for this, you don't need to change your brain. It's enough to change your approach to reading.
